Carmel-Highlands is an unincorporated residential area located in Monterey County on the central coast of California. It lies between the charming town of Carmel-by-the-Sea to the north and the spectacular Big Sur coastline to the south. Legend says Carmel Highlands was first settled by Scottish sailors who jumped ship and named the area due to its resemblance to the Scottish coast. It was officially established in 1916 by Franklin Devendorf and Frank Powers. Carmel Highlands offers stunning views and exclusive homes perched high on rocky cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is just minutes to many of the attractions of the Monterey Peninsula, including Point Lobos State Park, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, Carmel Beach, the famous 17-Mile Drive and Pebble Beach Golf Course. Nearby Carmel-by-the-Sea has a distinctive European-style atmosphere and is filled with art galleries, upscale restaurants and unique shops. Carmel Valley is a pastoral river valley and wine growing region that offers outdoor recreation, wine tasting and fine dining. Other places to visit in the area include the National Steinbeck Center and Fishermans Wharf in Monterey and the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in neighboring Pacific Grove. Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
