Pebble-Beach
is located on the magnificent Monterey Peninsula, south of San Francisco, near Carmel and Big Sur. Samuel Finley Brown Morse, who was a distant cousin of the telegraph-inventor, founded the community of Pebble Beach. In 1919, Morse formed the Del Monte Properties Company and his holdings included Del Monte Forest and the popular Hotel Del Monte (now the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey). On February 22, 1919, the Pebble Beach Golf Links and The Lodge at Pebble Beach held their grand opening. The Lodge had replaced a log-cabin lodge originally located on 17-Mile Drive. Today, Pebble Beach is home to one of the most prestigious golf courses in the world, which attracts visitors from around the globe. Other attractions include the scenic 17-Mile Drive, where the highway winds its way through the Del Monte Forest past such landmarks as The Lone Cypress and Bird Rocks, the Links at Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill. Visit the Pebble Beach Market and pick up fixings for a gourmet lunch on the beach, and stop and watch the sea otters, harbor seals and sea lions just offshore playing in their natural habitat. Colorful native wildflowers dot the landscape and sound of the crashing waves are just beyond the highway. Nearby Monterey is home to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row. The quaint town of Carmel is filled with unique shops and art galleries and the spectacular Big Sur coast line lies just south of town. Pebble Beach includes four golf courses altogether, three resorts, plus upscale shopping and accommodations.

Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
