Carmel
is located along California Highway 1, south of San Francisco. This colorful seaside village sits above a stretch of gorgeous white sand beach on the Monterey Peninsula. Carmel was founded by a group of Bohemian artists and writers, and their cultural influence is still felt today. Here, you will find no billboards, nightclubs or glaring neon lights, nor are there sidewalks or streetlights in the residential area. Homes are known by names, not numbers. Streets meander through a town that is filled with art galleries, one-of-a-kind boutiques, gourmet restaurants and small elegant inns and bed and breakfasts. Colorful flowers spill from every nook and cranny, and the quaint Gingerbread style architecture adds to the feeling of a European storybook village. To the north of Carmel is famous Pebble Beach and to the south is the Big Sur coastline, which has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Besides sightseeing and shopping, other things to do in Carmel include horseback riding on the beach, guided walks of the town through secret pathways and gardens, and visiting nearby Point Lobos State Park. Just minutes away is the town of Monterey which is home to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Beautiful Carmel-by-the-Sea is a city for romance, a place to unwind and renew, a town to visit over and over again and sure to become a favorite vacation destination.

Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
