Salinas
is nestled about twelve miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, approximately 100 miles south of San Francisco and 325 miles north of Los Angeles. It is situated in the heart of Salinas Valley, known as "The Salad Bowl of the World," an area that grows more produce than any other county in the United States. An impressive 80 percent of the nations' lettuce, 60 percent of broccoli and 90 percent of artichokes is grown in the Salinas Valley. The city is home to about 150,000 residents and is the birthplace of writer John Steinbeck. Salinas serves as the county seat for Monterey County and has an appealing blend of yesterday's charms with today's modern conveniences. The year round mild climate is conducive to playing golf and tennis almost any month of the year and other recreational activities include swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and horseback riding. The Salinas Community Center hosts symphonies, ballet, concerts and conventions and the newly revitalized downtown is home to the National Steinbeck Center and the John Steinbeck Library. Other attractions include the California Rodeo, the California International Airshow, Steinbeck House and the Steinbeck Festival. Salinas is also just minutes to the world famous Monterey Bay Aquarium and Cannery Row, the quaint seaside villages of Carmel-by-the Sea and Pacific Grove, magnificent Big Sur and Pinnacles National Monument.

Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
