San-Juan-Bautista
is a tiny town located south of San Jose and east of Salinas. For most, San Juan Bautista is just a tourist stop on the way to the Monterey Bay, but it's a lovely, quiet town set among rolling hills and giant oaks, worthy of the time to stop and stay awhile. Home of the Mission San Juan Bautista, this historic site is probably one of the most photographed and most well known of the California missions. Made famous when Alfred Hitchcock used the mission in his movie, "Vertigo," the mission is how the town began when it was constructed in 1797. Then, the countryside around San Juan Bautista was a cattle ranching area; today the town is a tourist attraction and a haven for artists. This small community is filled with history and charm, and makes a perfect spot for a relaxing vacation retreat. Besides the mission, the other main attraction in town is the beautiful San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The golf course and clubhouse has received special recognition by Golf Digest as one of the top ten in California for having good service and value. San Juan Bautista is also located near the Fremont Peak State Park. The park features hiking trails and picnic areas, and spectacular views of Monterey Bay. It also features an astronomical observatory; open to the public on selected evenings.

East of Monterey Bay, inland just a few miles, is an area of rolling farmland and giant oaks that is blessed with a mild, temperate climate. Located approximately 40 miles from the coast, the cool ocean air regulates the area's temperatures, keeping it warm, but not hot, in summer and mild in winter. It rarely snows here, except occasionally in the surrounding foothills. Winters, however, are damp with an average rainfall of 14 inches, which occurs during winter and early spring. Low clouds or fog is sometimes present in the summertime, although not as prevalent as right along the coastline, and temperatures are generally just a few degrees warmer than nearby Monterey and Carmel.
