Hollister
is a small town located in San Benito County, of which it is the county seat, just northeast of the town of Salinas on the central coast. It's situated between the Gavilan and Diablo Ranges of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and was founded as a ranching and farming community in 1872. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the state with a population that has tripled since 1980 (from just over 11,000 to 36,599 today.) A town with Old West charm and independence, Hollister has a strong local economy, is a small town yet with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. It is served by several major highways and is located approximately 100 miles southeast of San Francisco, and just 40 miles east of the Monterey Peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. Thus the town of Hollister has many recreational opportunities, not only those found on the Peninsula, and also the nearby Pinnacles National Park, Hollister Hills State Recreational Area, the San Justo Reservoir and the Thousand Trails Campground. Just a few of the outdoor activities include swimming, surfing, fishing and boating, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and golf. A short drive takes you to the seaside communities of Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel and many well known attractions such as The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, the Point Pinos Lighthouse, the quaint shops of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Point Lobos and the magnificent Big Sur coastline.

East of Monterey Bay, inland just a few miles, is an area of rolling farmland and giant oaks that is blessed with a mild, temperate climate. Located approximately 40 miles from the coast, the cool ocean air regulates the area's temperatures, keeping it warm, but not hot, in summer and mild in winter. It rarely snows here, except occasionally in the surrounding foothills. Winters, however, are damp with an average rainfall of 14 inches, which occurs during winter and early spring. Low clouds or fog is sometimes present in the summertime, although not as prevalent as right along the coastline, and temperatures are generally just a few degrees warmer than nearby Monterey and Carmel.
