Carmel-By-The-Sea
, or Carmel, as it is more commonly called, is a unique, quaint, colorful village that is located along California Highway 1, south of San Francisco. It was founded in the late 1800s by a group of Bohemian artists and writers, and their cultural influence is still seen and felt in the town today. You will find no billboards or glaring neon lights in Carmel, nor are there sidewalks or streetlights in the residential area. Homes are known by names, not numbers. Carmel has a charming European style and its rural setting and slow pace is very relaxing. Small boutiques, art galleries, gourmet restaurants, elegant inns and cozy bed and breakfasts fill the town. Colorful flowers spill from every nook and cranny, and the quaint Gingerbread style architecture adds to the feeling of a European storybook village. To the north of Carmel is famous Pebble Beach, where you can golf while overlooking the Pacific Ocean. To the south is the spectacular Big Sur coastline, which has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. Besides sightseeing and shopping, other things to do in Carmel include horseback riding on the beach, guided walks of the town through secret pathways and gardens, and visiting nearby Point Lobos State Park. During summer months, the city sponsors a Carmel Friday Night Art Walk. Romantic Carmel-by-the-Sea is a one-of-a-kind place and is sure to be a vacation destination you will never forget.

Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
