Pacific Grove
is a Victorian city set on the shores of Monterey Bay, sandwiched between the towns of Monterey and Carmel. Where Carmel-by-the Sea is artsy and unique, and Monterey is the quintessential coast tourist town, Pacific Grove has much more of a small hometown feel. It was started in 1875 as a Methodist summer retreat where people came to enjoy the natural beauty and recharge body and soul, and today people are still coming for pretty much the same reasons. It is known as “Butterfly Town U.S.A.,” due to the phenomenon of thousands of Monarch butterflies clustering together on the pines and eucalyptus on a few select acres in Pacific Grove. The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary is open during the wintering season from late October through early-March, and on the second Saturday of every October, the Pacific Grove School District holds the annual “Butterfly Parade.” Pacific Grove is also host to an annual “First Night Monterey,” an alcohol-free community celebration of the arts on New Year’s Eve. The Point Pinos Lighthouse, which is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast, is located in Pacific Grove, and other attractions include the famous 17-Mile Drive, The Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Carmel-by-the-Sea and Point Lobos State Park. Lovers Point in Pacific Grove is a scenic spot with a walking path that goes for miles right along the rocky shoreline. Be sure and bring some binoculars to watch the sea lions and otters frolicking just offshore.

Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
