Monterey
is located on the central coast of California, between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Situated within what has been described as "the greatest meeting of land and sea," Monterey offers visitors dramatic scenery, pine forests, historical communities, and world-class shopping and dining. Monterey is home to attractions such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf, the National Steinbeck Center, the famed 17-Mile Drive and the Monterey Wine Country. The romantic seaside town of Carmel and the stunning Big Sur coastline are just minutes away, so be sure to bring your camera for some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. Outdoor activities in the area include scuba diving, swimming, beachcombing, biking, kayaking and golf. (Famous Pebble Beach Golf Course is just a short drive south.) The Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the largest in the world, features a one-million-gallon tank containing sharks, tuna, ocean sunfish and sea turtles. A three-story kelp forest and a touch tank are just a couple of the many hands-on exhibits at the aquarium. Cannery Row, which began as a rowdy sardine-canning district, is a colorful mix of shops, restaurants, pubs and markets. Neighboring Pacific Grove is home to the West Coast's oldest, continuously operating lighthouse and also the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary. Monterey has day spas, cultural events and art galleries. Mild weather prevails on the Monterey Bay Peninsula year round. It is never too hot or never too cold. Sunny days with cool mornings and cool evenings are normal for the area, except in summer when a blanket of seasonal fog often hugs the coastline blocking out the sun for days. For this reason, summer may seem a few degrees cooler than fall and winter, although in actuality, it is not. On many days, the fog burns off by noontime. The rainy season generally runs November through March with an average annual rainfall of 18.5 inches. The average annual fog days are 183. If you are visiting and the fog rolls in, take a short drive inland to Carmel Valley where it is sunnier and usually a few degrees warmer than right along the Bay and coastline. Cool temperatures make humidity levels of no real consequence in the Monterey Bay area.
