Russian-River
is an area of California that has been popular as a tourist spot since the 1800s. It's easy to see why, with its lush riverbanks located in the heart of the redwood country, and just 15 miles to the spectacular Pacific Coast beaches. Situated in Sonoma County, approximately 75 miles north of San Francisco, the winding Russian River offers swimming, fishing, kayaking; or spend a relaxing afternoon canoeing along the river. Other activities include hiking, biking and horseback riding along beautiful pine forested trails in the Armstrong Redwood State Reserve. There is also the Austin Creek State Recreation Area nearby that is great for hiking and camping. For an extra special treat, take a hot air balloon ride and get a bird's eye view of the peaceful Sonoma Valley and wineries. Weddings can even be performed while in flight! The Northern California coast region, including the Russian River area, has a climate of mild days and cool nights - even in summertime. Right along the coast, low clouds and fog that usually burns off by early afternoon, is common. The further inland you go away from the ocean, the sunnier it is. There is little or no rain May through September. The rainy season begins in late October or November, with January and February being the wettest months. Flooding is a problem in winter when rains are heavy within a short period of time, mostly due to the many creeks and rivers in the area. Strong winds are usually present right along the coastline, but lessen as you travel inland. Fall is generally the sunniest season along the northern California coast.
