Monte-Rio
is a small town that can be described several ways - it is quaint, charming and unique. Locals say it's a village that is "squeezed between the hills and the river - you definitely know you're in the country." Either way you describe it, the town of Monte Rio is in a gorgeous setting near lots of outdoor recreational opportunities and attractions. It's located along the scenic Russian River in Sonoma County, near the ocean in northern California. Monte Rio surrounded by some of the most diverse scenery in the state - from giant redwoods to rolling hills and rugged coastline, to lush wineries and pastureland. A public beach in Monte Rio offers swimming, canoe and kayak rentals, fishing and boating. A short drive, or leisurely bicycle ride, takes you to the village of Duncans Mills, which houses a train museum, a collection of specialty shops, antique shops and fine art galleries. There are also nearby wineries with wine and cheese tasting, excellent restaurants and pubs with live music. A little further down the coast are whale-watching tours, horseback riding on the beach and fresh seafood in the coastal towns of Jenner and Bodega Bay. (Jenner is home to "Goat Rock" where you can watch seals and their pups at play.) A visit to Monte Rio is a chance to experience many facets of California - from coast to redwoods to wineries - it's all within easy reach of this peaceful little town.

The Northern California coast region, including the Russian River area, has a climate of mild days and cool nights - even in summertime. Right along the coast, low clouds and fog that usually burns off by early afternoon, is common. The further inland you go away from the ocean, the sunnier it is. There is little or no rain May through September. The rainy season begins in late October or November, with January and February being the wettest months. Flooding is a problem in winter when rains are heavy within a short period of time, mostly due to the many creeks and rivers in the area. Strong winds are usually present right along the coastline, but lessen as you travel inland. Fall is generally the sunniest season along the northern California coast.
