Bodega-Bay
is a sleepy little coastal town 68 miles north of San Francisco, along the spectacular Sonoma Coast. Made famous in the 1960s when Alfred Hitchcock filmed "The Birds," Bodega Bay remains much as it did then - a quiet and picturesque seaside village. Hitchcock fans come to see buildings where the movie was filmed, others come for the windswept beaches and rugged coastal scenery, reminiscent of the Scottish moors. Its a wonderful place to come relax and watch the sunset, go beachcombing, snorkeling, explore tide pools, or fly a kite! Romantic sunset bay cruises are available, as are deep-sea fishing and whale watching charter boats. Many come to Bodega Bay for the solitude and to spend lazy afternoons wrapped around a good book in a beachfront hotel. Others explore area antiques shops and art galleries. Weather can be unpredictable on the Sonoma coast, so bring a jacket. Nights are often crisp - perfect snuggling weather! Sample mouth-watering seafood in the town's restaurants, and for lodging, Bodega Bay has deluxe ocean view inns and spas, as well as easy on the budget hotels and motels. The Northern California coast region, including the Russian River area, has a climate of mild days and cool nights - even in summertime. Right along the coast, low clouds and fog that usually burns off by early afternoon, is common. The further inland you go away from the ocean, the sunnier it is. There is little or no rain May through September. The rainy season begins in late October or November, with January and February being the wettest months. Flooding is a problem in winter when rains are heavy within a short period of time, mostly due to the many creeks and rivers in the area. Strong winds are usually present right along the coastline, but lessen as you travel inland. Fall is generally the sunniest season along the northern California coast.
