Summerland
is a lovely town nestled along the Pacific Coast between the cities of Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. It’s well known in the area for its colorful, hillside buildings and big yellow restaurant visible from State Highway 101 just a few miles south of Santa Barbara. Founded in 1889 by rancher Harry L. Williams, an interesting man who had a keen interest in the supernatural. The town attracted a unique population as Williams invited others who believed as he did to join him. “The Big Yellow House” which, like many original buildings in town rumored to have ghosts, was built in 1884 as the founders personal residence. Today, the town is filled with antique shops and is home to a beautiful beach just below Highway 101. Summerland is also near the Los Padres National Forest, which is usually much less traveled than the San Bernardino and Angeles National Forests. This area is frequented by off-roaders, and other activities include hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, backpacking and wildlife viewing. The park stretches as far north as Big Sur and has plenty of primitive camping and tons of off-road trails. Summerland is a very desirable for out of state visitors and Californians looking for a quiet, secluded break from the crowded city areas.

Called the %u201CAmerican Riviera,%u201D the region of southern California between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains that includes Santa Barbara has a lovely, mild year round climate. With approximately 315 days of sunshine per year, the area%u2019s weather is greatly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. It receives about 18 inches of rainfall per year, most of that between the months of December and March. Dry conditions and low humidity levels prevail the rest of the year. Evening temperatures are cool all year long. Low clouds or early morning fog is sometimes present along the coast in summer, but almost always burns off by midday. The inland and mountains areas of Santa Barbara County see slightly hotter high temperatures and colder low temperatures.
