Escondido
is a lovely town located in southern California, just north of the city of San Diego. The name “Escondido” means “hidden” in Spanish, and is an apt description for the city that is situated in a shallow valley ringed by picturesque rocky hills. Escondido is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County, founded in 1888 and its the fourth largest city in the county, with a population of approximately 150,000 residents. Downtown Escondido has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with numerous restaurants, cafes, art galleries and shops opening for business. April through September, the city hosts the popular “Cruisin Grand,” where the pubic can view historic, classic cars and hot rods. Other attractions in the city include the Mingei Museum, which displays handcrafts from around the world and the California Center for the Arts, which is located in Grape Day Park. The art center features a childrens museum, the citys original Santa Fe Depot, the first library in town, a Victorian house, barn and blacksmith shop. Three large lakes are also located in the city and offer fishing and boating. A Certified Farmers Market is held in Escondido every Tuesday, year-round from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Vendors showcase fresh-picked produce and flowers, local honey, eggs, fresh roasted nuts, gourment European breads, salsa, tamales, breads and much more. The farmers market is located on Grand Avenue between Kalmia and Juniper.
