Escondido
is a lovely town located in southern California, just north of the city of San Diego. The name "Escondido" means "hidden" in Spanish, and is an apt description for the city that is situated in a shallow valley ringed by picturesque rocky hills. Escondido is one of the oldest cities in San Diego County, founded in 1888 and its the fourth largest city in the county, with a population of approximately 150,000 residents. Downtown Escondido has experienced a renaissance in recent years, with numerous restaurants, cafes, art galleries and shops opening for business. April through September, the city hosts the popular "Cruisin Grand," where the pubic can view historic, classic cars and hot rods. Other attractions in the city include the Mingei Museum, which displays handcrafts from around the world and the California Center for the Arts, which is located in Grape Day Park. The art center features a childrens museum, the citys original Santa Fe Depot, the first library in town, a Victorian house, barn and blacksmith shop. Three large lakes are also located in the city and offer fishing and boating. A Certified Farmers Market is held in Escondido every Tuesday, year-round from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.. Vendors showcase fresh-picked produce and flowers, local honey, eggs, fresh roasted nuts, gourment European breads, salsa, tamales, breads and much more. The farmers market is located on Grand Avenue between Kalmia and Juniper.

Escondido Weather & Climate

Sunshine almost every day and winters that are mild and free of snow attract millions to the southern California coastline, between Los Angeles and San Diego, every year. The climate is mostly classified as Mediterranean with winters being just a few degrees cooler than summers. There is little to no rain from May through September or October, which is great for outdoors activities, but bad for fire danger. Fog and low clouds usually hug the coastline in the summertime in the late evening and the wee hours of the morning, but burns off by midday. The rainy season generally runs November through March or sometimes April. Thunderstorms are infrequent and light. As you move further inland away from the cooling effect of the ocean breezes, temperatures become warmer with more variation between summer and winter.
