Lake San Marcos
is a small town in northern San Diego County, located along Highway 78 southeast of Oceanside and west of Escondido. This fast growing town is situated in the Twin Oaks Valley, where the very first American settler in this area built a 160-acre homestead. This is a lovely area of southern California, surrounded by sprawling horse ranches and farms and fruit orchards. It is home to San Diego’s only lakefront resort, as well as three 18-hole golf courses and several driving ranges. There are two stables in the area for horseback riding, access to lakes, beaches and regional recreational facilities, plus many parks and hiking and biking trails. The city of San Marcos has a new Civic Center that is located on the northern portion of a 60-acre Town Center, and the 300-acre Cal State San Marcos is on the south side, and offers lots of cultural opportunities including theater, music and fine arts. Lake San Marcos has dozens of restaurants, with everything from seafood to ethnic foods, and shopping opportunities. San Marcos is a town with a laid-back, peaceful atmosphere, and a near-perfect climate – a wonderful combination for a relaxing vacation destination. For more action, just a short drive south takes you to all of the well-known San Diego attractions such as Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, Mission Beach, Legoland and Balboa Park.

Sunshine almost every day and winters that are mild and free of snow attract millions to the southern California coastline, between Los Angeles and San Diego, every year. The climate is mostly classified as Mediterranean with winters being just a few degrees cooler than summers. There is little to no rain from May through September or October, which is great for outdoors activities, but bad for fire danger. Fog and low clouds usually hug the coastline in the summertime in the late evening and the wee hours of the morning, but burns off by midday. The rainy season generally runs November through March or sometimes April. Thunderstorms are infrequent and light. As you move further inland away from the cooling effect of the ocean breezes, temperatures become warmer with more variation between summer and winter.
