Calabasas
is located in the rolling hills of northwestern Los Angeles County, often called “The Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.” The name comes from the Spanish word “calabaza” which means pumpkin, squash or gourd, and so it comes as no surprise that the city is host to an annual, colorful Pumpkin Festival each October. The town of Calabasas is also just a short drive to many of the major Los Angeles attractions, yet it is committed to retaining its’ “semi-rural” way of life. In addition, many parts of the town offer spectacular views of the San Fernando Valley and beyond. Nearby, the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area contains a wide variety of plants and wildlife, and offers all kinds of recreational activities. Visitors can choose from hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, swimming, surfing, picnicking, bird watching or whale watching. The park also offers many special programs created just for children, and is home to a Visitor Center, Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center, the Malibu Lagoon Museum and Will Rogers State Historic Park. Also, the Malibu Creek State Park Visitor Center, Topanga State Park Nature Center and the Sooky Goldman Nature Center all have information and maps of the various trails and programs throughout the park.

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.%u2019s infamous %u201Csmog.%u201D In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as %u201CSanta Anas,%u201D though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
