Encino
is a district of Los Angeles, located in the central portion of the southern end of the San Fernando Valley region. Its name comes from the Rancho Los Encinos (Ranch of the Oaks) which was a parcel of land given to 3 mission Indians by the Spanish government following the abandonment of the California missions in the early 1800s. Rancho Los Encinos was established in 1845. For over a millennium, Encino was the home of a massive California Live Oak Tree known as the Encino Oak. It is possible that the area was named Encino for this particular tree (since encino means “oak” in Spanish.) The ancient tree was known for both its size and longevity, but it died on February 7, 1998 after an El Nino storm felled it. Today there is a monument to the giant tree at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Louise Avenue where it once stood. Encino is also home to many celebrities and was the site of RKO Studios and many movies, such as “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Other attractions in Encino include the Encino Velodrome, an outdoor oval bicycle racing track since 1963, and the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area, which offers multiple golf courses, tennis courts, soccer fields, bike paths and a lake bordered by some 2,000 Pink Cloud Cherry Trees.

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.%u2019s infamous %u201Csmog.%u201D In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as %u201CSanta Anas,%u201D though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
