Topanga
is an unincorporated community of around 12,000 residents, located in Topanga Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains of western Los Angeles County. Topanga is approximately 13,000 acres in size and is bounded on three sides by park or conservancy lands and on the south by the Pacific Ocean. Malibu lies just west of Topanga. To the east is Pacific Palisades. Topanga has a very interesting history. Its’ name was given by the Tongya Indian tribe and means “a place above,” and the first ranch was homesteaded here in 1885. In the 1950s, actor Will Geer moved to the canyon and his friend, folk singer/songwriter, Woody Guthrie, also lived on his property. Together, they unintentionally founded what became known as the Topanga artists’ colony. The area is known as a bohemian enclave of artists, musicians and actors. One of the main attractions in the community is the Theatricum Botanicum, founded by Will Geer in 1973. It is a natural outdoor amphitheater and features Shakespearean plays, modern classics, original productions and musical concerts. Numerous festivals are held in the area each year, including the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest, an annual event since 1961. The Topanga State Park is nearby, the largest park in the Santa Monica Mountains and part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area.

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.'s infamous "smog." In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as "Santa Anas," though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
