Sherman Oaks
is an 8.1 square-mile neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. The districts southern boundary is Mulholland Drive and it is roughly bounded by Studio City to the east, Van Nuys to the north and Encino to the west. Sherman Oaks is situated along the Los Angeles River, the Ventura Freeway, San Diego Freeway, Beverly Glen Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard. It serves as the “gateway” to the San Fernando Valley. Sherman Oaks is an affluent neighborhood with several upscale boutiques and restaurants. It is home to the world famous Sherman Oaks Galleria, which is considered the meeting place of the “Valley Girl,” a 1980s cultural label popularized by the song and movie of the same name. Sherman Oaks is host to an annual Street Fair and Carnival, which usually takes place in October. During this event, a half-mile stretch of busy Ventura Boulevard is closed down with food booths, entertainment and rides for the children. Nearly 100,000 people visit the Street Fair each year. The neighborhood also holds a Spring Festival, also along Ventura Boulevard, sponsored by The Village at Sherman Oaks, Inc., Business Improvement District. Sherman Oaks is, of course, conveniently located near all of Los Angeles major attractions.

Southern California enjoys a mild year round climate that is classified as Mediterranean. There are two distinct seasonal changes, categorized by the amount of rainfall received - a dry summer and wet winter with modest variation in temperature. In the dry season, a Pacific high-pressure system dominates the weather pattern creating warm and very dry air and a thick marine layer that typically advances inland during the night and burns off to hazy sunshine by midday. Surface pollutants trapped under the marine layer, or fog, create L.A.%u2019s infamous %u201Csmog.%u201D In winter, the high system is no longer dominant and storms fed by subtropical moisture bring lots of rain into southern California during the months of November through March. Afternoon sea breezes of 10 to 15 mph are common. Strong offshore winds, known as %u201CSanta Anas,%u201D though not uncommon, rarely cause damage.
