St-Helena
is a lovely town set in the middle of the famous Napa Valley wine-growing region of northern California. It is located approximately 65 miles north of San Francisco, or west of Sacramento between the towns of Calistoga and Napa along highway 29. Although it has all the charm of a small town, St. Helena offers visitors big city amenities - world-class wineries and restaurants, boutiques and art galleries, and a wide selection of accommodations, from grand villas to cozy bed & breakfasts. Shopping in historic downtown St. Helena is a fun way to pass the time, with everything from designer clothing to an old-fashioned hardware store. The St. Helena Premium Outlet stores are approximately two miles north of town, and the larger Napa Premium Outlets are a short half-hour drive away. The countryside around St. Helena is surrounded by well-known wineries, so sightseeing and wine tasting is a very relaxing way to spend the day. But there are plenty of other things to do here as well. Indulge yourself with a hot air balloon ride over the whole Napa Valley, or rent bikes for a ride along a scenic country road. Hiking, horseback riding, hang gliding and golf are all available in or near St. Helena. Also, be sure and stop at the Bale Grist Mill State Historic Park for a tour of this water-powered gristmill that was built in 1846.

The northern end of the Napa Valley wine country is just an hour and a half north of San Francisco. Autumn is considered by many to be the best time to visit the wine country. This is when vines are in full color and the harvest is taking place, and the weather is delightful. Warm, sunny dry afternoons and cool evenings are the norm for autumn. The rainy season runs November through March, with January and February having the most rain. Temperatures are cool in winter at night, but rarely go below the freezing mark. The Napa Valley region is hotter than the San Francisco area in the summertime, although not unbearable because there is little or no humidity. In spring when temperatures are mild, and new vines are budding is a popular time for bicycling through the area.
