Santa-Rosa
is often called the "Gateway to the Sonoma County Wine Country." This pretty town is located 55 miles north of San Francisco and is the largest city in Sonoma County, with a mix of urban art and culture and natural beauty and adventurous recreation. Nearly 200 world-class wineries are near Santa Rosa, many which offer wine tastings and tours. You will also find museums in Santa Rosa, beautiful gardens, farmers markets, antique shops, spas, art galleries, boutiques and both indoor and outdoor malls. Santa Rosa is near Lake Berryessa on Highway 101, and just 30 miles east of the Pacific Ocean, and within minutes you can be in the middle of a spectacular redwood forest. Needless to say, outdoor recreation abounds here. There are 19 golf courses in Sonoma County, eleven with championship layouts; six of these are within the city limits of Santa Rosa. You can take a ride in a hot air balloon, drifting lazily over the vineyards. Or go rafting and canoeing in the nearby rivers, and boating, fishing, swimming and jet skiing on Lake Berryessa. This area has many wonderful state parks, local parks, biking and hiking trails and horseback riding stables. Sonoma County is also famous for their cuisine, to go along with their famous wines, and the agricultural bounty of this fertile area.

The northern end of the Napa Valley wine country is just an hour and a half north of San Francisco. Autumn is considered by many to be the best time to visit the wine country. This is when vines are in full color and the harvest is taking place, and the weather is delightful. Warm, sunny dry afternoons and cool evenings are the norm for autumn. The rainy season runs November through March, with January and February having the most rain. Temperatures are cool in winter at night, but rarely go below the freezing mark. The Napa Valley region is hotter than the San Francisco area in the summertime, although not unbearable because there is little or no humidity. In spring when temperatures are mild, and new vines are budding is a popular time for bicycling through the area.
