Calistoga
sits at the top of the famed Napa Valley, approximately 80 miles north of San Francisco. With a population of 5,000, Calistoga has retained its small town character, yet offers big city amenities. Nestled among rolling hills, vineyards, trees and streams, Calistoga is home to 30 wineries that produce premier wines enjoyed around the world. The town of Calistoga was originally founded as a mineral springs spa. Today, there are more than a dozen spas in town where you can enjoy a relaxing mud bath, massage or herbal wrap. It is, in fact, known as the resort capital of the Napa Valley. To go along with the fine wines produced in the area are first class restaurants of every kind. Other things to see in Calistoga include Old Faithful Geyser, the Petrified Forest and the Bale Grist Mill State Historical Park. There is also miles of hiking and biking, hot air ballooning and gliding. There are several special events held in the area, such as the Beer and Sausage Festival, usually held in September, Old Mill Days in October and Pioneer Christmas in December. Calistoga attracts visitors from around the world and you'll understand why when you visit this great little town set in the lush Napa Valley, California.

The northern end of the Napa Valley wine country is just an hour and a half north of San Francisco. Autumn is considered by many to be the best time to visit the wine country. This is when vines are in full color and the harvest is taking place, and the weather is delightful. Warm, sunny dry afternoons and cool evenings are the norm for autumn. The rainy season runs November through March, with January and February having the most rain. Temperatures are cool in winter at night, but rarely go below the freezing mark. The Napa Valley region is hotter than the San Francisco area in the summertime, although not unbearable because there is little or no humidity. In spring when temperatures are mild, and new vines are budding is a popular time for bicycling through the area.
