The Central Sierra Nevada Mountains and foothills region generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000-foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the Sierra Mountains in the wintertime. The intensity of storms can be quite severe at elevations above 7,000 feet. Tire chains are often required on many of the mountain roads in winter. With rains and snow melt, spring is one of the best times to see the many beautiful waterfalls in the area.
