Fish-Camp
is a small mountain community located in central California's Mariposa County. The town of Fish Camp is probably most well known as the home of the Yosemite Mountain/Sugar Pine Railroad, an authentic steam powered railroad, that now operates as a tourist attraction. Fish Camp is located along Highway 41 on the way to Yosemite National Park. It's worth your time to stop and explore this beautiful region of spectacular scenery and recreational opportunities. Mariposa County has hang gliding, guided back packing trips, rock climbing, horseback riding and horse pack trips, gold prospecting and rock hounding. Fish Camp is also near picturesque Bass Lake. Crystal blue water is surrounded by tall pine trees and forested mountains form the backdrop for the lake. Choose among fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, and bike riding around the lake or camping. Central California located on the western slopes and foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000 foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Average rainfall is between 40-50 inches, with October through April generally being the rainy months. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Winters in the mountains are snowy and cold, although sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the mountains in the wintertime.
