Huntington-Lake
is located at 7,000 feet elevation in the High Sierras of central California, about 65 miles northwest of Fresno. Situated deep in the Sierra National Forest between Yosemite and Kings Canyon, this area is a pristine, pine forested, secluded region that is largely undeveloped wilderness. It can get crowded in the summertime, but in winter, it's an amazingly picturesque winter wonderland for those who come for the snowmobiling and cross-country skiing opportunities (over 100 miles of groomed backcountry trails.) In summer, visitors enjoy boating, fishing, mountain biking, camping, canoeing and hiking. Many of the wilderness trails are not available in the spring, but walking is possible around the lake basin. Bird watching and wildlife viewing are other popular activities at Huntington Lake; deer often come to the edge of the lake at twilight. This region is also very beautiful in the spring as the snow melts and wildflowers start to bloom. Boat and canoe rentals are available at Huntington Lake Resort and the Rancheria Marina. The nearby town of Lakeshore offers lodging, restaurants and a saloon. The Mono Hot Springs are located about 15 miles northeast of Huntington Lake, off Kaiser Pass Road and Highway 168.

The Central Sierra Nevada Mountains and foothills region generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000-foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the Sierra Mountains in the wintertime. The intensity of storms can be quite severe at elevations above 7,000 feet. Tire chains are often required on many of the mountain roads in winter. With rains and snow melt, spring is one of the best times to see the many beautiful waterfalls in the area.
