Wawona
is located within Yosemite National Park, east of the city of Merced along Highway 41 near Bass Lake. This small community is home to one of the oldest mountain resorts in the state of California, which is now a National Historic Landmark. Wawona also has year-round vacation home rentals and other lodging choices for visitors. Situated in the redwoods of Yosemite, Wawona is an ideal base from which to explore the majestic beauty of Yosemite. Hike the river trails to Yosemite and Bridal Veil Falls, stand in awe of the giant sequoia trees, bicycle around the park, and at night relax by a crackling fire, toasting marshmallows while you enjoy the peaceful silence. This is what makes Wawona so special. Other activities in the area include fishing, golf, rock climbing, horseback riding, downhill and cross-country skiing. The park offers ranger guided walks, talks and horseback rides, and rafting and canoeing are also available on the nearby rivers. A steam-powered train takes visitors on trips through the Sierra National Forest, including a special Moonlight Ride that runs July through October. Yosemite National Park is the nation's third oldest park and is truly an ecological wonder. It includes some of the most spectacular scenery in the world, including some of the largest waterfalls found anywhere. The community of Wawona, inside Yosemite Park, is also near the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway and the Kings Canyon National Park.

Central California located on the western slopes and foothills of the central Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, generally enjoys a pleasant year round climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. This region has a slogan that says it is "Below the Snow and Above the Fog." However, the 10,000 foot peaks in the area's eastern region attest to a wide diversity of terrain and climate. Average rainfall is between 40-50 inches, with October through April generally being the rainy months. Snow is rare in the lower elevations, but as you move higher into Yosemite and the Mammoth Lakes region, all of that changes. Winters in the mountains are snowy and cold, although sunny and chilly days are not uncommon. Visitors must be aware that conditions can change rapidly in the mountains in the wintertime.
