Fresno
is the county seat for Fresno County, which is located in the heart of the vast, fertile San Joaquin Valley. The town of Fresno lies along Highway 99 on the banks of the San Joaquin River, near Millerton Lake and the Pine Flat Reservoir. Spanish, for the word ash tree, Fresno's first white settlers were forty-niners who arrived during the 1848 California gold rush. The county was founded in 1856 and the city was established with the Central Pacific Railroads arrival in 1872. Today, Fresno is the hub of a county that is called the "raisin capital of the world," and the nations most diversified agricultural producer. Attractions in the city of Fresno include The William Saroyan Gallery, housed in the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art, History and Science, also Fresno's Chinatown, the Downtown Planetarium, the Chaffee Zoological Gardens, and the Fresno Art Museum. The city of Fresno is also considered the jumping-off point to Sequoia, Kings Canyon, and Yosemite National Parks. No other city in the nation has three major national parks right at its backdoor. The San Joaquin River, which flows through the town of Fresno, is one of two major rivers that flow into the north end of the San Francisco Bay. It rises on the slopes of Mount Goddard in the Kings Canyon National Park and flows first northward, then southward out of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The river is a popular recreation spot, especially at Millerton Lake, which was formed by the river behind Friant Dam.

The heart of the Central San Joaquin Valley of California, approximately halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, has generally mild weather throughout the year. Summers are hot and dry and winters are mild and cool. Elevations above 5,000 feet, near the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Forests, have snow from November through March. The lower regions experience precipitation in the form of rain during these months. Fog can sometimes be a problem in the wintertime when a condition known as "tule fog" can linger for days at a time. The lower valley region is known as the number one agricultural region in the world, where over 250 different crops are grown on one million irrigated acres.
