San-Simeon
is most well known as being home to famous Hearst Castle, which is located just below the small town. This picturesque village on the central Pacific Coast offers shops, galleries and restaurants and a pretty, crescent shaped beach that's great for relaxing and swimming. A grassy picnic is on a hill above the beach. The main attraction in town, however, is the spectacular Hearst Castle. It was completed in 1947 and consists of the main house and three guesthouses with a total of 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways. Viewing the estate is divided into four separate tours with a special evening tour that allows visitors to experience the castle at night. San Simeon State Park is about five miles south of the castle. It's one of the oldest in the California State Park System and features coastal bluffs and promontories that offer unobstructed views of the ocean and rocky shoreline. Activities include hiking, fishing, surfing, picnicking, camping and wildlife viewing. A 3.3 mile trail runs through the San Simeon Natural Preserve, with scenic overlooks, benches and interpretive panels with information on the wildlife and habitat. A couple of miles further south of the State Park is the artists' community of Cambria. A romantic get-a-way, Cambria sits amid towering pines across from the ocean and offers great restaurants, art galleries and a Friday night farmer's market.

The South-Central coast of California, between San Francisco and Los Angeles enjoys year round mild temperatures. There is very little variation in the temperature, although it can be a little warmer just a few miles inland than it is right at the ocean. Areas of patchy low clouds and fog can occur in summertime along the coast, with skies usually becoming mostly sunny by afternoon. Nights are cool - even in the middle of summer. The rainy season is generally November through March, with virtually almost no precipitation in the summertime. Occasionally, heavy rains in the wintertime can cause mudslides along Highway 1, the Coast Highway, and travel can be restricted.
