Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help moderate the summer heat and marine influences keep winters very mild. The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its fog, especially in the summertime. This occurs when warm air masses flow across a cooler ocean and the moisture in the air condenses and forms fog. The rainy season in northern California runs November through March, with no measurable precipitation in the summertime. Spring and fall are generally the sunniest, and warmest, seasons in the Bay area.
