Point-Richmond
or "The Point," as it is called by locals, is a neighborhood in the southwestern corner of the city of Richmond, situated at the base of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. It is in western Contra Costa County in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. Although part of the large metropolitan area of San Francisco, Point Richmond is well known for its small town charm and quaint "village" atmosphere. The neighborhood was Richmond's central downtown area during the late 1800s and has retained many of its trademark "Mom 'n Pop" shops and restaurants. The area has fiercely opposed any large, chain stores from moving into their neighborhood. Point Richmond is built around three sides of a large hill, with many historic Victorian homes adorning the view. As part of the city of Richmond, the Point offers 32 miles of shoreline and a variety of activities such as boating, fishing, hiking and golf. Richmond has 26 city parks, 15 playgrounds, a public marina with 750 boat berths at Marina Bay, various beach parks, several yacht harbors, various swim centers and community centers. The city of Richmond has also completed 24 miles of the San Francisco Bay Trail, which is more than any other city on this planned 500-mile multi-purpose trail that will encircle the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays.

Mark Twain once said, "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." While this might be a slight exaggeration, the climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is mild year round with cool evenings - even in the summertime. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help moderate the summer heat and marine influences keep winters very mild. The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its fog, especially in the summertime. This occurs when warm air masses flow across a cooler ocean and the moisture in the air condenses and forms fog. The rainy season in northern California runs November through March, with no measurable precipitation in the summertime. Spring and fall are generally the sunniest, and warmest, seasons in the Bay area.
