Oakland
is the eighth largest city in California and it lies on the eastern shore of the San Francisco Bay, nestled against the scenic Berkeley Hills. To the north is the city of Berkeley and to the west, across the Bay Bridge, is the city of San Francisco. The population of Oakland is approximately 415,000. Downtown Oakland is a vibrant mix of shopping, restaurants, bars and nightclubs. It is also home to the "Oakland Art Murmur," a weekly event in the Uptown region that occurs the first Friday of every month and features art openings from various galleries. There are several geographical distinctions in the city of Oakland - downtown Oakland, East Oakland, North Oakland and West Oakland. Of these, East Oakland actually encompasses more than half of the citys area. There is also a distinction between "the hills" and "the flatlands." The "hills" generally refers to the more upscale neighborhoods on the northeast side of the city, while "the flatlands" are historically more working-class neighborhoods (located closer to the San Francisco Bay.) Oakland is home to historic Jack London Square, a colorful waterfront area filled with shops, restaurants, hotels, outdoor markets and other entertainment. Lake Merritt/Lakeside Park, in Oakland, is one of the largest saltwater lakes in the country and offers 122 acres with formal gardens and a childrens museum, hiking, sailing, windsurfing and much more. Other attractions in Oakland include the Chabot Space and Science Center, Chinatown, the Lost Canyon Winery and the Oakland Zoo.

Mark Twain once said, "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." While this might be a slight exaggeration, the climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is mild year round with cool evenings - even in the summertime. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help moderate the summer heat and marine influences keep winters very mild. The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its fog, especially in the summertime. This occurs when warm air masses flow across a cooler ocean and the moisture in the air condenses and forms fog. The rainy season in northern California runs November through March, with no measurable precipitation in the summertime. Spring and fall are generally the sunniest, and warmest, seasons in the Bay area.
