Lafayette
is a lovely community located in Contra Costa County, approximately 25 minutes from San Francisco. The town of Lafayette was incorporated in 1968, although the area was first settled in 1848 during the California Gold Rush. It's one of California's fastest growing cities with a population of about 30,000 (up from only 3,772 in 1990.) It's known for its high quality of life, low crime rate, quaint downtown area, clean air and beautiful, oak-studded hills. Located between the towns of Berkeley and Walnut Creek, Lafayette is near all of the top San Francisco Bay Area attractions. Lafayette also offers recreational opportunities at the Lafayette Reservoir and the Iron Horse Walking Trail. However, the town is probably most well known as an arts community, popular for its theater, music, art and literary events. The Lafayette Gold Coast Chamber Players have become synonymous with the Bay Area's best classical music. The community also hosts an annual Jazz Festival, a weeklong event that features "students and stars" with performances from local high schools as well as some of the best jazz musicians in the country. The fine arts are evident everywhere in Lafayette - with prestigious galleries such as the Barclay Simpson and the Witherspoon to local shops that display the works of local artists. The town of Lafayette also offers a variety of distinctive specialty shops, an antiques shopping district, several boutiques and fine dining establishments.

Mark Twain once said, "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco." While this might be a slight exaggeration, the climate in the San Francisco Bay Area is mild year round with cool evenings - even in the summertime. Cool breezes from the Pacific Ocean help moderate the summer heat and marine influences keep winters very mild. The San Francisco Bay Area is known for its fog, especially in the summertime. This occurs when warm air masses flow across a cooler ocean and the moisture in the air condenses and forms fog. The rainy season in northern California runs November through March, with no measurable precipitation in the summertime. Spring and fall are generally the sunniest, and warmest, seasons in the Bay area.
