Placerville
is a gold rush town that got its unique name from the "placer" gold deposits found in the riverbeds and hills surrounding the town in the late 1840s. It's located northeast of Sacramento, near Lake Tahoe, along Highway 50 in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. Placerville a clean, picturesque city with a very historic downtown area, (also called "Hangtown.") History buffs will enjoy taking a walking tour of the town, where landmarks such as the Bell Tower are on display. The Bell, placed in the tower in the plaza in 1865, was used as an alarm system to call out the firefighters. Today, the Bell Tower serves as a gathering place for parades celebrations and other Historic Main Street events. The city of Placerville also owns and operates the Gold Bug Mine, the only gold mine in California still in operation. For outdoor recreation, Placerville has an ideal location, right where the Sierra Nevada hills begin to turn into mountains. The nearby American River and El Dorado National Forest offer canoeing and river rafting, fishing and boating, hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities. Placerville is centrally located to many area attractions such as Apple Hill Ranches, historic Coloma, which was the site of the first gold discovery in the state, and Lake Tahoe.

The foothills region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Northeastern California, enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Many people are surprised to find such a marked change of seasons at this elevation, but leaves change and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in fall. This area receives lots of rain November through March and it begins to taper off in spring. Snow is possible, but rare. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
