Georgetown
is a small town of approximately 1,000 located in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, just east of the town of Auburn. Georgetown was once a trading center for gold miners, and boasted a population of around 10,000. It's in the heart of one of the most historical regions of the state, and a walk down the main street of town makes you feel as if you've been transported back to 1849 when Georgetown was a bustling gold miners camp. Locals call Georgetown "The Pride of the Mountains," due to its picturesque location, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Sierra Mountains. The town is part of "The Georgetown Divide, which is situated between the Middle and South Forks of the American River. This region played a major role in the California Gold Rush, and also what is called the Divides "green gold," which was the huge tracts of timber found on the mountainsides. Today, a number of small communities dot the Georgetown Divide, including Georgetown, Coloma, Cool, Garden Valley, Quintette, Pilot Hill, Mosquito and Volcanoville. Gold seekers and lumberjacks still inhabit the backwoods of the Divide, but due to its great historical significance and natural beauty, tourists have also discovered it. Recreational opportunities abound, including camping, fishing, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and golf. An easy day trip from Georgetown will take you into the High Sierras, and the recreational playgrounds of Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe.

The foothills region of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in Northeastern California, enjoys warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Many people are surprised to find such a marked change of seasons at this elevation, but leaves change and temperatures drop as the rainy season begins in fall. This area receives lots of rain November through March and it begins to taper off in spring. Summers are hot and dry with sunshine almost every day. Fog is sometimes a problem in winter, although not as common as in the lower elevations. Thunderstorms are rare, but can happen any time of the year. As you move higher into the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the seasons are even more distinct and snow can become quite deep in winter.
