Lompoc
is a city located in Santa Barbara County, California. Incorporated in 1888, the word "Lompoc" means "little lake" or "lagoon." It is home to Vandenberg Air Force Base, and, as of the 2000 census, it had a population of 41,103 residents. Considered a "bedroom community" of Santa Barbara, Lompoc (pronounced Lom-poke) is also known for its colorful flower fields and its beautiful murals. Maps showing the location and description of the murals can be obtained from the Chamber of Commerce. Lompoc is called the gateway to the Sta. Rita Hills wine appellation, known around the world for its premium pinot noir and chardonnay wines. Thirty premium boutique wine labels are produced in Lompoc at wineries located in what is affectionately termed the "Lompoc Wine Ghetto." Numerous other wineries are located along Highway 246, and Lompoc hosts the Santa Barbara County Vintners Festival held at River Park each spring. Wine tasting rooms are located in the Wine Ghetto and other locations around town. Other attractions in or near Lompoc include the La Purisima Mission, tours of Vandenberg AFB, and the Lompoc Museum. The town is also host to an annual Flower Festival each June that features a parade, rides, games, live entertainment and lots of good food.

Lompoc Weather & Climate

The climate of the Los Alamos area is very similar to that of the central coast cities such as Santa Barbara. Although located slightly inland, the weather is influenced greatly by the Pacific Ocean. Temperatures are pleasant year round, although it is slightly warmer in summer and slightly cooler in winter than right along the coastline. The Los Alamos region gets over 300 days of sunshine per year and has very low humidity levels. The rainy season runs November through March, with only about 18 inches of rain per year. Low clouds from the ocean can drift into the area in summertime, but mostly skies are clear and sunny. Cooling ocean breezes help moderate the temperatures.
