Imperial Beach
is located approximately twenty miles south of San Diego along Highway 86, near the Mexican border. It has been called “Classic Southern California” with its beautiful wide beaches, warm year-round climate, outdoor recreation and fishing pier. Imperial Beach has the distinction of being the most southwesterly community in the U.S., and is a great place to swim, surf, sunbathe, fish, or just spend the day playing on the beach. It is known to have some of the best sand in the nation, and the U.S. Open Sandcastle Building Competition is held here each year. The main beach at Imperial Beach has a park for picnicking, volleyball and basketball areas, a playground for children, a picturesque fishing pier and restrooms and showers. Just south of town are two wildlife sanctuaries and a state park. Imperial Beach is not glitzy and glamorous, but is instead a modest, family-style community that some describe as still somewhat of a “hippie” town. It retains its’ middle class beginnings and is a very affordable place to visit in the San Diego area. Just a short drive south takes you to Tijuana, Mexico with all of its shopping and other tourist attractions. There’s a lot to love about Imperial Beach, this “classic southern California” beach town that was voted as one of the nation’s best four beaches by “First for Women” Magazine, alongside Lanikai Beach in Hawaii, Sanibel Island, Florida and Gay Head on Martha’s Vineyard.

The Baja Peninsula is generally one of the hottest and driest places on the North American continent. However, a small coastal area of northwestern Mexico surrounding Tijuana has more of a Mediterranean climate with considerable coastal fog and a winter rainy season similar to southern California. Here the rainy season runs November through March, with very little to no precipitation the rest of the year. Winter storms, generated as far away as the Gulf of Alaska provide areas along the coast west of the mountains with up to 12 inches of rain per year - which is enough to support sizable forest at the higher elevations. Evenings can be chilly any time of the year in comparison to warm daytime temperatures.
