Mission Bay
is located approximately 3 miles northwest of downtown San Diego and contains two islands, many coves and inlets and also a large marina for pleasure boats. Water sports activities abound on Mission Bay, including boating, fishing, swimming, water-skiing, wind surfing and jet skiing. Mission Bay is also the home of famous Sea World San Diego, one of the premier theme parks in Southern California. Founded in 1964, this 166-acre marine zoological park is home to dolphins, sharks, polar bears, sea otters, sea lions, seals, penguins, manatees, flamingoes and more. Mission Beach, on Mission Bay, is a beautiful two-mile long sandy beach filled with old-style cottages, condos, colorful houses and beach hotels. A boardwalk runs for three miles along Mission Bay, ending north of Pacific Beach and is always filled with bicyclists, runners, skateboarders and rollerbladers. You can engage in people watching and sunbathing on Mission Bay or go surfing, boogie boarding or kayaking. The southern part of Mission Beach is known for its’ beach volleyball. Mission Bay is, of course, conveniently located near all of the great San Diego attractions, such as museums and art galleries, casual and five-star dining, quaint shops and modern shopping malls, Old Town San Diego and the famous San Diego Zoo.

Extreme Southern California, in the San Diego area, enjoys a beautiful, mild climate year round. January is generally the coldest and wettest month of the year, and August is usually the warmest month. In actuality, however, there is very little variation throughout the year in temperature in the coastal region, except when easterly winds off the desert pushes the temperature up a few degrees. The dry season runs May through September with very little measurable precipitation during this time. October is a transitional month, and is usually dry but can have variable weather. Fog and low clouds along the coast are common, but usually burn off by noon. A marked feature of the climate in this region is the wide variation within a short distance due to the topography of the area. Visitors can enjoy a coastal climate, mountains and desert all within a day's drive of each other.
