Helendale is located off Interstate 15, southwest of Barstow, and is considered part of the Riverside/San Bernardino metro area. The town of Helendale is most well known for the scenic Silver Lakes resort area. These two beautiful blue lakes cover an area of approximately 277 acres, and are set against a backdrop of mountains. Fishing, boating and sailing are available on the lakes. A PGA rated golf course takes up another 210 acres around the lake, which attracts golfers from around the world. Another excellent golfing opportunity, the Green Tree Golf Course, is located just south of Helendale in the town of Victorville. A beautiful inn sits on Silver Lakes and offers first class amenities such as two heated pools, hot tubs, and golf on site, tennis courts and a bar/restaurant on site. Helendale is near several family fun attractions such as the Roy Rogers Museum, the Calico Ghost Town, the Mojave National Preserve and the Rainbow Basin, which contains fossils of ancient mammals exposed in its rock formations. The desert region of southern California, east of Los Angeles and just southwest of Barstow is a unique area for weather with much greater extremes of temperature and season than the coastal areas. Summer highs can be in excess of 100 degrees and it is mostly dry all over, with occasional heavy showers over the high desert and mountain areas. The air quality in this region is excellent which gives way to bright sunny days and star filled skies at nights. Intensely hot during the summer, it becomes more bearable during the winter months when temperatures are comfortable and nights are chilly. What rain there is in this area usually occurs most frequently and heavily November through March, but the average rainfall for the area is less than 4 inches per year.
