Groveland is a historic small town located just 23 miles from Yosemite National Park. This sleepy little town began as a gold rush town, then was the headquarters for the Hetch Hetchy water project before becoming the gateway to the treasured national landmark of Yosemite. Nestled in the hills of Tuolumne County, Groveland is also home to the Pine Mountain Lake community. Although this is a gated community, many of the facilities are open to the public, including an 18-hole, first class golf course, and a lake, restaurant, horseback riding center and campgrounds. Groveland is also known as the home of the Iron Door Saloon, the oldest continuously operating saloon in California, and the Sugar Pine Railroad, which is a great day trip for anyone who loves historic railroads. At an elevation of 2800 feet, Groveland is above the fog and smog, but below the snow and cold. Wildlife is abundant in the area, and the air is crisp and clean. The very scenic Tuolumne River has white water rafting, and nearby Stanislaus National Forest has miles of trails through tall pines and meadows that are perfect for hiking and biking. The Tuolumne River is a designated part of the National Wild and Scenic River System. Other nearby points of interest include Columbia's State Historic Park, which is considered the best preserved Gold Rush town in California, and the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park in Jamestown.

Groveland Weather & Climate

The foothills region of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, known as "The Gold Country," or "The Mother Lode," has four seasons, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. In the fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop, with rains beginning in November and continuing through March. In the wintertime, it's cold enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. On the rare occasion that it does snow, it usually doesn't stay on the ground for long. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, although temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break.
