Murphys
is a small, historic town, often called "The Queen of the Sierras." Located about an hour's drive southeast of Sacramento in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Murphys takes you back in time to the days of the gold rush era. Many of the buildings in town date back to the mid 1800s, and have iron gates, stone walls and beautiful gardens tucked behind white picket fences. A pretty little steam with a bridge across it runs through town, and the tree-lined Main Street is full of interesting shops, galleries and good restaurants. Murphys is home to several fun-filled special events, such as the annual Calaveras Grape Stomp and Gold Rush Street Faire. The Murphys Homecoming is a 55-year-old event, usually held in July that combines an old-fashioned street faire with a reunion of residents who have moved out of the area. The first Friday in December brings the annual Murphys Christmas Open House and the old time Cornish legend of the "Tommyknockers," presented by Main Street merchants. Murphys is also just a short drive from the world-class ski resort of Bear Valley, and is situated between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park. Lodging varies from rustic to romantic. With an abundance of activities and things to see and do, Murphys is sure to have something for everyone in your family!

The Sierra Nevada Foothills region, or the "Mother Lode," as it is sometimes called, has four mild seasons. In fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop. Winters receive lots of rain in November through March, and it is cool enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny. The foothills region is usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions in summer. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break. Thunderstorms can occur anytime in California, but they are very light and infrequent.
