Angels-Camp
was, at one time, one of the richest gold mining towns in California. Today, this town of 3,000 is located along scenic Highway 49, east of Sacramento. The town is famous for their annual Frog Jumping Jubilee, which was, in fact, modeled after a frog jump in Mark Twain's short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Every year since 1928, hundreds travel to Angels Camp to watch and compete in the frog jump. There is even a "Frog Hop of Fame," commemorating the winners of the contest! Another special event in town is the annual Living History Days, usually held in May. Participants are in period dress of the Gold Rush era, and they hold demonstrations, Mark Twain storytelling, a costume contest, a street dance, and old-fashioned pork roast. Other things to do in the Angels Camp area include visiting the Mercer Caverns and Moaning Caverns, or driving to one of the other nearby historic gold rush towns. Nearby New Melones Lake offers fishing, swimming, boating and other recreational opportunities. Several hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and inns are available to make your stay in Angels Camp a comfortable one, so come visit and watch history come alive!

The Sierra Nevada Foothills region, or the "Mother Lode," as it is sometimes called, has four mild seasons. In fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop. Winters receive lots of rain in November through March, and it is cool enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny. The foothills region is usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions in summer. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break. Thunderstorms can occur anytime in California, but they are very light and infrequent.
