Twain-Harte
is located in the historic Gold Country of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains in Tuolumne County. It is not, however, a "Gold Rush" town, but was established in 1924 as a resort town by Kehtura Wood. It got it's original name from Wood's husband's two favorite authors, Mark Twain and Bret Harte. This quaint little town is still known as the "resort among the pines," and has also become known as a premier retirement area. Set among the forest, Twain Harte has golf, and several scenic lakes that offer swimming, boating, fishing and camping. Nearby Dodge Ridge offers excellent skiing in wintertime. And, the Stanislaus National Forest is just a short drive away and offers more opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and more. The streets of Twain Harte are lined with lots of interesting shops and restaurants, and first class accommodations are available in town for visitors. Day trips will take you through the historic "Mother Lode" and to such towns as Sonora and Jamestown. And, Twain Harte has something else that is not found everywhere in California - four seasons! This area enjoys warm summers and just enough snow in the wintertime to be beautiful, but not inconvenient, and spectacular color in the fall. Twain Harte started as a resort community and more and more visitors continue to discover it each year.

The foothills region of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains, known as "The Gold Country," or "The Mother Lode," has four seasons, with mild winters and hot, dry summers. In the fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop, with rains beginning in November and continuing through March. In the wintertime, it's cold enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. On the rare occasion that it does snow, it usually doesn't stay on the ground for long. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, although temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break.
