Long-Barn
is a small community located in the Central Sierra Nevada Mountains of Tuolumne County, approximately 20 miles east of Sonora (which is about three hours from the San Francisco Bay Area.) It's an easy day trip from Long Barn to Yosemite National Park and the town is also near the Stanislaus National Forest, which also offers incredible mountain scenery, camping, backpacking, rock climbing and hiking opportunities. A 30-45-minute drive will take you to the Gold Rush towns of Sonora, Jamestown, Columbia and Twain Harte, where you'll find antique stores, art galleries, restaurants and unique shops. You can even take a ride on a train pulled by an authentic steam engine in Jamestown. Just minutes from Long Barn is Pinecrest Recreation Lake, which is a pristine reservoir that sits at the 5600' level and offers boating, fishing, picnicking and a hiking trail around the lake. Other nearby activities include golf, river rafting, panning for gold, horseback riding, mountain biking and more. In wintertime, Long Barn is only 20-25 minutes from the Dodge Ridge Ski Resort and Leland High Sierra, which offers snow sledding and tubing. Long Barn is a relaxing, uncrowded getaway destination in the High Sierras of Central California where the fresh, pine-scented air and starry nights will have you wishing you could stay a while longer.

The Sierra Nevada Foothills region, or the "Mother Lode," as it is sometimes called, has four mild seasons. In fall, the leaves change and temperatures begin to drop. Winters receive lots of rain in November through March, and it is cool enough at night for a fire in the fireplace, but rarely does it ever snow in the foothills. Spring is very pleasant with showers sometimes continuing through April and May. Summers are hot, dry and sunny. The foothills region is usually a few degrees cooler than the lower valley regions in summer. Fog, which is often a problem at lower elevations in winter, occurs less frequently here. Many people from the Valley travel "above the fog" in the wintertime for a much-needed sunshine break. Thunderstorms can occur anytime in California, but they are very light and infrequent.
