Carnelian-Bay
is a small community that lies between Tahoe Vista and Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe's quiet North Shore. Everything you would expect in a Lake Tahoe vacation is here, without the usual crowds and traffic generally found in South Lake Tahoe. Carnelian Bay has its own beach with picnic areas and grills and restrooms. There is a full-service marina located in nearby Tahoe City that includes a gas dock, boat, slip and buoy rentals, boat launch, power and sail boat sales and services. You can charter a fishing boat or go parasailing, and they even offer ski boat rentals and lessons. Upscale shopping is also available at the marina. Other summertime activities in Carnelian Bay include hiking and mountain biking, river rafting and golf. In winter, Lake Tahoe is pure magic. The mountains and pines are covered with snow and skiing, sledding, snowboarding and cross-country skiing are all possibilities. Carnelian Bay is just a short drive to 14 different world class ski areas and a challenging two-mile cross-country ski course is located nearby. Carnelian Woods is great for families, a safe play for children to enjoy the snow with sleds and toboggans. For adults, South Lake Tahoe is approximately 40 minutes away for nightlife, gambling and fine dining.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
