Tahoe-City
is a quaint town located in an alpine forest on the northwestern shore of Lake Tahoe at the 7,000-foot level of the gorgeous Sierra Nevada Mountains. Tahoe City is considered the "hub" of the North Shore region of Lake Tahoe, and several marinas make it easily accessible by boat, as well as by car. Located on the outskirts of Tahoe City is Burton Creek State Park, which offers visitors 2,000 acres of forestland with six miles of unpaved hiking and cross-country skiing trails. Nearby Emerald Bay features a campground area that is open from May through the middle of September. Situated on the western shore of Lake Tahoe, this park also features Vikingsholm Castle, built on the lakes only island, also hiking trails and some of the best views of Lake Tahoe to be seen in the area. Other outdoor recreational activities in Tahoe City include golf, bicycle rentals, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, boating and fishing. A full service marina is located in Tahoe City that offers fishing charters, parasailing and ski boat rentals and lessons. Upscale shopping is also on site at the marina. Tahoe City is just ten minutes to Northstar Ski Resort, and an easy drive to Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Nearby attractions include the Ponderosa Ranch (where the TV series, "Bonanza" was filmed,) the Donner Memorial Museum and Donner Lake, North Shore Lake Tahoe casinos, and Virginia City mining town in Nevada.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, just west of the Nevada state line has an alpine mountain climate. This high mountain region is known as one of the chilliest spots in the country, which comes as a big surprise to many that visit California. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada peaks, the towns of Truckee and Graeagle, and the Donner Lake region, often gets an inversion, whereby cold air is trapped overnight, thus the reason for the extreme cold temperatures in the very early morning hours - even in summertime. As the sun comes up, the temperature begins to rise and daytime highs are usually quite pleasant. Large amounts of snow are received in the higher elevations of the Sierras - up to 40 feet. Rain is possible any month of the year, although most occurs October through April. Mountain weather conditions can change quickly, and rain in the lower elevations can mean snow, sleet or ice in the higher elevations.
