This is a clean town with a strong community whose residents are ecologically aware and creative and always striving to make good use of their natural resources. Downtown Arcata retains its heritage in its historical storefronts, most notably the Jacoby's Storehouse which as been restored by local artisans and craftspeople. The colorful Arcata Plaza has several unique shops and restaurants on the grassy Town Square. Arcata sits on the banks of the Mad River, and is near the Pacific Ocean and Humboldt Bay, making it accessible to plenty of outdoors recreational opportunities. The scenic redwoods coast area of Northern California has a mild year round climate that is completely dominated by the Pacific Ocean. This region that is located approximately two hours south of the Oregon State line experiences frequent and abundant rain October through April. These months account for about 90 percent of the annual precipitation, which averages 40 inches. The months of June through September are generally dry. Warm summer days are marked by low clouds and fog which usually dissipates by early afternoon with sunny conditions remaining until late evening when low clouds move back in. Temperatures are quite moderate with the annual range being one of the smallest in the lower 48 states. Fall is marvelous along the northern coast with warm, sunny days and calm ocean conditions. Areas over the coastal mountains, as close as 40 miles away, can have a much greater range of temperature than the coastal areas.
