Fortuna began as a gold mining town, but the early settlers instead found a very fertile farmland, and so their riches soon came from farming instead of gold. The town of Fortuna is located in northern California, south of Eureka, along U.S. Highway 101 on the banks of the Van Duzen River near the Pacific Ocean. This area of scenic, rugged coastline has been called "one of the top unspoiled destination points in the world," by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. The area has a rural atmosphere, breathtaking scenery including giant Redwoods and the ocean, plus tons of outdoor recreational opportunities and an overall peaceful, relaxing attitude. The town of Fortuna brings to mind the small towns of the 1950s. It has supermarkets and retail shops, service stations and lodging facilities, plus a wide variety of restaurants. The town is home to several festivals throughout the year, including an annual Apple Harvest Festival in October; a city-wide event that features barbecue, live music, hayrides, apple pie sales, games and more. There is also a Micro-Brew Festival held in September, Holiday Festival in December and a weekly Farmer's Market each Tuesday, June through October. For those looking for a safe, small town atmosphere from which to base a northern California coastal vacation, Fortuna makes an excellent choice. Attractions near the town include the wineries of Anderson Valley, the seaside village of Mendocino, the Fort Bragg Skunk Train, Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and the Victorian "Old Town" in Eureka.

Fortuna Weather & Climate

The scenic redwoods coast area of Northern California has a mild year round climate that is completely dominated by the Pacific Ocean. This region that is located approximately two hours south of the Oregon State line experiences frequent and abundant rain October through April. These months account for about 90 percent of the annual precipitation, which averages 40 inches. The months of June through September are generally dry. Warm summer days are marked by low clouds and fog which usually dissipates by early afternoon with sunny conditions remaining until late evening when low clouds move back in. Temperatures are quite moderate with the annual range being one of the smallest in the lower 48 states. Fall is marvelous along the northern coast with warm, sunny days and calm ocean conditions. Areas over the coastal mountains, as close as 40 miles away, can have a much greater range of temperature than the coastal areas.
