Sonoma
is a small town located along State Route 12, approximately 50 miles northeast of San Francisco. Sonoma is a historic community with a small town friendliness and slow pace, but due to its location in the heart of the Sonoma Valley wine country, it has amenities associated with much larger cities. This picturesque town of 9,000 residents is built around agriculture and tourism, and is surrounded by miles of beautiful vineyards and historic wineries. Sonoma County is located between the rugged Pacific Coast and world famous Napa Valley, offering an abundance of recreational opportunities. You can explore sandy beaches and quiet coves, hike through towering Redwood groves, go swimming, fishing, horseback riding or bicycling along backcountry trails. You'll find world class dining in Sonoma with unique food prepared by some of the best chefs in the world. Sonoma is also home to several gorgeous bed and breakfasts, inns and hotels. Some sit on the banks of the Sonoma Creek, and others offer outstanding views of the Sonoma Valley. Another interesting place to visit in Sonoma is the Mission San Francisco de Solano, which was established in 1823. A Mediterranean climate best describes the Napa Valley of California. Warm dry summers and wet cool winters, perfect for growing the award winning grapes used in the wine making, is what you can expect when visiting the area. Rain is rare during the growing season, with most occurring between October and May. January and February are usually the wettest months. The fog which characterizes the region keeps the vines cool and maintains the natural acidity in the fruit. A history of volcanic eruptions and earth movements means that soils are diverse in the area. Summers are always sunny and warm, but never uncomfortable due to the influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean and low humidity levels. Autumn is a spectacular time of the year in the Valley when vines are in full color and it is harvest time.
