San Mateo is a suburb of San Francisco, located about twenty miles south of the city along Highway 101. The city of San Mateo has a population of around 90,000, and is home to the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, one of the longest highway bridges in the country, which connects the city to the East Side of San Francisco Bay. Recreational and cultural attractions abound in the city of San Mateo, and it also has some of the best shopping and restaurants on the Peninsula. Visitors find a thriving downtown district in San Mateo, as well as two newly renovated shopping plazas. The city’s convenient location, situated at the crossroads of three major freeways, provides easy access for exploring San Francisco to the north and San Jose to the south. Attractions in town include the Coyote Point Museum/Wildlife Center, the San Mateo Arboretum, the Japanese Tea Garden, and the Allied Arts Guild. San Mateo is also home to “Filoli,” a beautiful estate that was the setting for the 1980s TV show, “Dynasty.” A new championship, 18-hole golf course and an Ice Chalet offer year round golf and ice-skating. Other recreational activities found in the area include swimming, hiking, biking, horseback riding, windsurfing, sailing and fishing.

San Mateo Weather & Climate

The peninsula located approximately twenty miles south of San Francisco enjoys a mild year round climate. There is a range in temperature of only approximately 15-20 degrees from summer and winter, with lots of sunshine during the day and cool temperatures at night. This year round vacation destination is greatly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. Cool ocean breezes help moderate the temperatures in summer and a thick marine layer means early morning clouds and fog that dissipates as it moves inland by noontime. Approximately 18 inches of rainfall is received per year during the months of October through early April. Temperatures are cool enough at night in the wintertime for a cozy fire in the fireplace, but it rarely freezes or goes below the 40-degree mark. Flooding or mudslides are sometimes a problem when lots of rain is received during a short period of time.
