Woodside
is a pretty, little town of approximately 5,000, located south of San Francisco between Palo Alto and San Mateo. It is near the San Francisco Bay and the Crystal Springs Reservoir. Woodside was ranked as the sixth richest community in America, per capita, in the 2000 census, and ranked number 17 in Worth Magazine’s list of the 250 richest towns in 2002. Today, this small town that was once the site of a booming lumber industry has been called “a seat of Silicon Valley power, the habitat of millionaires plotting the future of the computer and Internet industries.” This fascinating and tranquil small town was first settled in the 1840s as a lumber town, and by the late 19th century, it was home to several country estates. The town was incorporated in 1956 to prevent urbanization, and it still retains a rural residential character, though it is a short commute to the Silicon Valley and San Francisco. In Woodside, affordable housing is unavailable; vacant lots, if there were any, would sell for over a million dollars. Several famous people live here, including Gordon E. Moore, co-founder of Intel; Neil Young, rock singer; and Joan Baez, folk singer. Woodside is also home to Koko, the gorilla who was taught sign language. A small downtown business district includes two restaurants, a grocery store, hardware store, and a nursery. Many of the town’s residents own horses, and the town maintains a series of horse trails. Woodside was the location for the 1978 movie, Heaven Can Wait and the 1999 movie, Bicentennial Man.

The peninsula located approximately twenty miles south of San Francisco enjoys a mild year round climate. There is a range in temperature of only approximately 15-20 degrees from summer and winter, with lots of sunshine during the day and cool temperatures at night. This year round vacation destination is greatly influenced by the Pacific Ocean. Cool ocean breezes help moderate the temperatures in summer and a thick marine layer means early morning clouds and fog that dissipates as it moves inland by noontime. Approximately 18 inches of rainfall is received per year during the months of October through early April. Temperatures are cool enough at night in the wintertime for a cozy fire in the fireplace, but it rarely freezes or goes below the 40-degree mark. Flooding or mudslides are sometimes a problem when lots of rain is received during a short period of time.
